So I’m on the bus home from work after a long and tiring day. It’s payday and I’ve got very little food at home. The average person might get on their phone and order a takeaway but I have long since accepted that this is not a possibility for me. Vegan takeaways are getting easier but vegan and gluten free are a no-go. Or are they? Utilising the free wifi provided by the bus company, I got googling! Deliveroo do not deliver to my area so that ruled out Pizza Express and Zizzi. I was very surprised to find that Pizza Hut do a gluten free base with the following ingredients:
Gluten Free Blend (Tapioca Starch, Rice Flour, Maize Starch, Psyllium Husk Powder, Sugar, Buckwheat Flour, Thickeners
(Xanthan Gum, Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose), Salt), Water, Rapeseed Oil, Yeast, Pea Protein.
That’s right, they’re vegan! On the Pizza Hut website you can choose to have no cheese which makes the vegetable deluxe pizza completely gluten free and vegan. You can also add or remove toppings as you like!
My pizza was here within the hour and topped with red onion, mushroom, peppers, tomatoes, sweetcorn and pineapple. I’m a pineapple on pizza lover! Pizza Hut make all of their gluten free pizzas a rectangular shape which is great for piece of mind. The first thing I noticed was how many toppings were on my pizza! I love a full pizza and this had more toppings than any gluten free vegan pizza I’ve had anywhere else. It meant that it tasted a bit more fresh and healthy. The base was crunchy but a bit thicker than the Pizza Express equivalent. The only improvement would be the addition of some vegan cheese.
I’ll definitely be getting this pizza again despite the price. It cost me around £16 altogether which is more than I would pay if I was eating out. It was a lovely payday treat though to eat from a takeaway box in my pyjamas in front of the tv!
Have you tried the Pizza Hut pizza or have you found any other vegan and gluten free takeaway options?
