Welcome to day 6 of Vegan MoFo! Today we are up to D in our A-Z of gluten free veganism and I’m going to review one of my favourite gluten free and vegan products.
DS Gluten Free are a widely available brand which can be found in most free from aisles. Their range includes many affordable products including rolls, pizza bases, breads, biscuits and frozen foods. Unfortunately, so far, I’ve only found two types of product in their range which are vegan as well as gluten free. The White Ciabatta Rolls and Brown Ciabatta Rolls were a brilliant find and I almost always have a packet in my kitchen!
The white ciabatta rolls are my personal favourite. They are wonderfully soft and I use them for sandwiches as well as for dipping in hummus, toasting and making garlic bread. The ingredients for these rolls are:
“Water, Maize Starch, Maize Flour, Apple Fibre, Rice Flour, Dextrose, Thickener: (Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose), Soya Protein, Sunflower Oil, Yeast, Salt, Acidulants: (Tartaric Acid, Citric Acid.)”
I find it such a relief to find a white roll which is gluten free, doesn’t contain egg and doesn’t have a huge list of strange ingredients! I buy these from ASDA for £1.70 for a packet of 4.
The photo above shows the garlic and herb bread which I make with these ciabattas a lot. All that is needed is one ciabatta roll, some dairy free margarine (I use Vitalite) and some dried mixed herbs and chopped garlic. The garlic and herbs are mixed in with a large dollop of margarine which is then spread very thickly on a ciabatta roll that has been cut in half. This is put in the oven for 10 minutes or until it has gone brown. It goes extremely well with soup or pasta!
Have you tried DS products? Which gluten free vegan breads would you recommend?
